While Kerala as a state may not be big on celebrating Diwali as a festival, we do love our Diwali sweets. From the variety of Laddoos and Jalebis to the assortment of Pedas, Halwas, and Barfiis, we’ve been spoilt for choice by the many legendary sweet shops we’ve come to love over the years. Recently, with many new speciality sweet shops having opened up in the city, and some of the historic bakers from Mattencherry having moved into the city and set up shop here, Kochiites with a sweet tooth are truly in for a good time these days. So today, Eat Kochi Eat is helping us out with the most popular sweet shops in Kochi according to their members.

Bikash Babu Sweets

A newcomer into this segment, this young, family run business is already the talk of the town. A Bengali speciality sweet shop, they’ve taken a name for their mouthwatering rasagullas and rasmalai. Their dedication to quality products has helped them carve a name for themselves in the city. Located at Kaloor-Kadavanthra road right next to Kathrkadavu bridge, the Bikash Babu sweet box is never complete without their malai cham cham, sandesh, and mishti doi.

Shantilal S Mithaiwala

A favorite with Eat Kochi Eat, and featured in our last month’s Explore: Mattancherry food walk, Shantilal S Mithaiwala is a testament to quality and dedication to the art of making sweets. A landmark of Mattancherry since 1953, and specializing in khova (milk) based sweets, this family run business by early Gujarati settlers in Kochi is famous for their milk burfi and milk peda. Shantilal is located in Gujarati Road in Mattancherry

Annapurna Sweets

The other half of Mattancherry’s famous sweet shops that have stood the test of time, Annapurna truly deserves praise for being one of the longest and oldest running sweet shops in Kochi. Started in 1945 in similar fashion to Shantilal’s, Annapurna recently opened shop in the city for the first time with their brand new outlet in Kaloor-Kadavanthra road near Kathrikadavu bridge, thus giving an entire new generation of sweet lovers access to their delicious jalebis, pedas, and ladoos.

Sri Krishna Sweets

Sweet shops may have come and gone, but Kochi’s love affair with Sri Krishna sweets is truly one for the books. At a time when local bakers and the likes of Bimbis were the only options for sweets in Kochi, Sri Krishna sweets was a revelation for those of us who were desperately searching for a good sugar rush. A household name for Kochiites since early 2000s, Sri Krishna Sweets captivated us with their array of South Indian sweets including their rava laddoos, milk burfis, and their rich red jalebis.

Want more options for your Diwali sweet box? Well, you’re in luck! If you’re on the lookout for something other than the run-of- the-mill sweet shop this year, our members also suggested Harsh Dhaba in Kakkanad, Brindhavan, Swami’s in Peta, BTH, and Crowne Plaza.
