Wkochi caught up with the people behind the newly opened cozy Gangster themed cafe Gangsta Wrap and learnt all about Pablo Oreobar and Al ‘Chicken’ Capone

The love for food and a thirst for innovation is what led Ashwin Chiramel to set out on this interesting new venture that is Gangsta Wrap! The Gangsta themed menu at this food hotspot in Thevara comprises a curious and eye catchy list of wraps and shakes. From Al ‘Chicken’ Capone and Veerappan Vindaloo, to Strawberry Corleone and Nutella Devi, all items are named after real life gangsters!

The place opened up to public on the 24th of last month and has already garnered many regulars from around the area and beyond. “On the opening day, we even had a couple of customers who came in like three times on the same day. That was very surprising and the response has been much more than we expected” says Rosemary Jacob, Ashwin's relative. This small, cozy place is self run by Ashwin, with the occasional help from family and friends.

A classical chef by profession, Ashwin had always been interested in Kerala cuisine and trying new things. Like in most cases, the story starts with an engineering graduate who wanted to follow his passion of cooking. He pursued his culinary studies in Paris and New Zealand, and came back to Kerala as an accomplished chef with a vision to start out with something new. So what did he do? He combined all that he loved. He loved the Kerala Parathas, he loved his mom's recipes and other special recipes from his family (like the Pistol beef, his mom's secret cutlet recipe is incorporated into it), he loved his passion of culinary. Combine that with the classical training in cuisine he underwent, a new set of rolls, wraps and shakes were born. Traditional with a bit of continental touch.

The next big challenge was the naming. It’s hard to believe that Gangsta Wrap weren’t originally called Gangsta Wrap. They had to back out from the initial name because of issues regarding the registration and other procedures. A family brainstorming session ensued with a lot of names thrown in from around the table. Finally it came to Gangsta Wrap. Then came the decision to name all the items on the menu based on international Gangsters or famous Gangsterish cartoon characters.

With a heavy response from the customers, they are now looking into bettering themselves by understanding customer demand and perfecting their food. They’ve also started takeout and delivery around the area as well. The unique appeal of the place coupled with the its delicious array of delicacies are surely something everyone should try out!
